Who is staring at the sea is already sailing a little.”
Paul Carvel, writer

Welcome to Northboats, a small family-run boatbuilding, repair and restoration business situated in the heart of north-east Scotland's beautiful countryside.

We specialise not only in building and restoring traditional wooden boats, but also maintaining many types of craft, from kayaks and GRP dinghies to cruising yachts. We can repair and service your boat and can tackle those time-consuming and messy jobs such as antifouling or applying paint and varnish.

If your boat is moored in north Scotland but you live some distance from it, we can look after it for you, visiting it regularly and ensuring that all is well. We can also prep it through our BoatButler service so that it is ready for you to sail whenever you arrive.

We provide a personal service at all times, backed by our love of boats, our dedication to our work and our passion to help maintain the country’s maritime heritage.

To discover how Northboats can help get you on the water, keep you on the water or ensure you spend as much time on the water as possible, click on one of the buttons on the side menu bar for more information, then call or e-mail us.

Northboats was established by Mike Lowson who was born and raised in the fishing community of Arbroath on Scotland’s east coast. He learned his trade at the Boat Building Academy in Lyme Regis, Dorset, from where he graduated with distinction. He holds a City and Guilds Level III qualification in Boat Building, Maintenance and Support and also the RYA Diesel Engine certificate. More importantly, he has absorbed much of the craft and the passion of the skilled boatbuilders who trained him.
